Vitamin B12 deficiency is more common than you think. You're at higher risk if you're over 65 years old, taking metformin, and whether you've had falls. But don't let your doctor be satisfied with a regular vitamin B12 level, as "normal" test results are often seen with B12 deficiency. More helpful for this situation is to test for your methylmalonic acid or homocysteine levels. Methylmalonic acid and homocysteine are converted by vitamin B12 (cobalamin) to other substances. So you would know you're B12-deficient if you have high amounts of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine.
