All-Cause Mortality - or Death Rates are often seen as the gold standard of whether to create a prototype for a preventive procedure. Unfortunately, that's usually too high a bar. If we waited for that, we'd never get anything done. Why? A significant part of this is just statistics. (And a second part has to do with delay vs. prevention.) If we were to design studies that demonstrate the impact on all-cause mortality, it would often take over a million participants. Who's going to fund a study that size?
