An article titled “Triglycerides, Remnant Cholesterol and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease” was published in JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology) in February 2019. It’s a great review as well as an update of the current medical standards on triglycerides and how to lower them. Some of the paper’s essential points: - LDL cholesterol is (arguably) a major cardiovascular risk factor. - However, triglycerides and remnant cholesterol appear to be residual risk factors. Thus, treatments of triglycerides and remnant cholesterol should also be given focus. - The current therapies for hypertriglyceridemia are fibrates, niacin, and omega 3 fatty acids. - Good thing, genetic studies are pointing to more precise triglyceride-lowering treatments. - Ongoing trials are being conducted to determine whether lowering triglyceride and remnant cholesterol could really bring down the number of cardiovascular events.
