TMAO and Nature vs Nurture - FORD BREWER MD MPH

Episode Summary

This is an editorial of the Tang NEJM article, a landmark article re: TMAO and cv inflammation and risk. The first sentence is hard to understand for most. But it contains the most important point. It states that the "Galtonian distinction between" (NATURE VS NURTURE) is "an overly simplistic dichotomy." His point is that genes and environment interact; it's not just a simple nature vs nurture competition. The second point, maybe more important, is "which nature". Our biome carries over 100 times the genetics that we carry. And the gut is the major bionic contributor. https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMe1302154 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3701945/
