Dr Ford Brewer - PrevMed

The Kraft Insulin Survey: Who, What, Why?- FORD BREWER MD MPH

Episode Summary

We cover the details of the Kraft Insulin Survey. We cover What it is, Who should get it, When and Why. We also cover the book and the author, Dr. Joseph Kraft. He was a pathologist who ran the medical labs of a large Chicago hospital a couple of decades ago. He did a series of over 14,000 Insulin Surveys. Instead of using 75 grams of sugar, as in the OGTT, he used 100 gm. For those docs that say these tests are "designed to fail", these have fewer carbs than many large soft drinks or sodas. They also have less than half the carbs of a popular fast food "value meal". We then show findings in the book which underline the marked effect of aging on prediabetes. In addition, we compare this test to the standard screening test of the time - the Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG) or Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS).
