Soft Plaque vs Hard Plaque - Which Arterial Plaque is Dangerous? - FORD BREWER MD MPH

Episode Summary

Soft plaque vs hard plaque—is one type of arterial plaque better than the other? According to the Honda study, hard plaque (calcified plaque) seems more stable than soft plaque. The study was designed to predict future CV events among subjects with stable coronary artery disease. In 112 subjects with soft plaque, there were 29 recorded cardiovascular events (that's 25.9%). On the other hand, in 103 patients with calcified plaque, there were only 4 events(3.9%). Here's a link to the Honda study: https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.2003.09.063
