The Lancet Low Carb/Diet studies (ARIC & PURE) both appear to be good science. Why, then, do they indicate what appears to be opposite conclusions? I think, rather than argue immediately that one of the studies is wrong, we need to study the details further. There were some major differences in the study populations. The PURE study looked at a dozen populations all over the world. It included some of the poorest countries in the world. An example is Bangladesh, war tor stricken by poverty, with entire communities living on top of trash heaps. The ARIC study follow-up, (which is being interpreted as saying "Low carb diets kill you"), drew predominantly middle-income Caucasian & African-American communities. Asian and Middle-Eastern communities were less than 1% of the study population.
