The obesity paradox: can fatter be healthier? We mention a book and NATURE Endocrinology Reviews article on this subject: https://www.nature.com/articles/nrendo.2014.165#key-points. We also go to a JAMA meta-analysis on the topic. It's a review of Mendelian Randomizations on whether obesity causes diabetes, Heart attack, and stroke:https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2714500. Bottom line: yes, there are times when people can be healthier AND heavier. An example occurs with weight gain associated with smoking. And there is a case that can be made that exercise MIGHT be more critical to health than weight loss in certain situations, like mild obesity. But does that mean you shouldn't worry about losing weight? NO.
