How to Measure Your Arterial Plaque: CIMT

Episode Summary

I recently had a follow-up CIMT (carotid intima media thickness) test. I continue to have a low level of overall average burden or average CIMT of .68mm. That corresponds to an average 52 or 53-year-old male. This is a big drop from my original reading of .884 mm in February of 2015. So that's great news. However, I still have a discreet plaque in my right carotid bulb, a small area that continues to stay large, and maybe is growing. The original CIMT showed a thickness in the area of 1.14mm. Now, 2 years later, it was measured at 1.6mm. That's not good. But it has always been heterogeneous. That means it has some calcium and a thick fibrous plaque. The goal would be to get to a full-blown echogenic reading. That would mean more calcification and a thicker fibrous plaque. That is more stable than a soft plaque.
