Docs & patients often overlook Vitamin B12 deficiency. The above two articles give an excellent overview of the problem. The NEJM article provides a great science review of the topic. Over 25% of patients do not have anemia, and many patients have normal vit b12 serum levels. However, Methylmalonic acid is almost always elevated. And homocysteine is usually elevated. I provide a brief overview of the general topic of Vit b12 deficiency.
